Novak Djokovic - u finalu Australia open 2008

Novak stops Fed express
Friday, 25 January, 2008
By Luke Buttigieg

Novak Djokovic has ended Roger Federer's 19-match winning streak at Melbourne Park to book a place in Sunday's Australian Open 2008 men's singles final.

The Serbian No.3 seed, who had only beaten Federer once in six previous meetings, avenged his defeat to the Swiss world No.1 in last year's US Open final with a dominant 7-5 6-3 7-6 (7-5) victory.

Djokovic's reward for his impressive triumph is a clash with unseeded Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in what will be the Australian Open's first tournament decider between two players yet to win a Grand Slam title since 1998.

In the early stages it was Federer who looked the goods, leading with a break and the chance to grab a second at 0-30 on Djokovic's serve, but from 3-5 down in the opening set Djokovic turned the match on its head.

The 20-year-old won the next five games in a row with a pair of breaks against Federer's serve and by the time he led 5-1 in the second set he'd claimed an amazing nine of 10 games.

Ahead by two breaks Djokovic did tighten up when serving for the second set but he didn't make the same mistake when he had a second chance in the ninth game, despite a warning for taking too long between points.

The third set was an arm wrestle, with Federer having to save four break points in the third game and Djokovic two that were also set points in the 12th, before Federer made the early running in the tie-breaker.

Ahead 3-1 early, Federer again led it 5-4 but Djokovic won the next couple of points to set up match point and then completed the brilliant win when Federer netted a forehand.

Federer's last straight-sets loss at a Grand Slam came when he went down to Brazilian Gustavo Kuerten in the third round of the 2004 French Open, and the defeat was his first at Melbourne Park since the corresponding stage three years ago against eventual champion Marat Safin.

Novak Djokovic- Zapamtite ovo ime

Nova zvezda na teniskom nebu - Nole made in Serbia.

Sa 19 godina najmladji pobednik ovoga turnira ikada.Ceo turnir bez izgubljenog seta.

Novak Djokovic succeeded where Roger Federer failed, and his reward was the Sony Ericsson Open title. The precocious 19-year-old Serb beat qualifier Guillermo Canas 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 in Sunday's final.

Canas upset the top-ranked Federer twice last month, including in the fourth round Tuesday. But the 29-year-old Argentine's relentless baseline game failed to faze Djokovic, who dominated with his versatile shotmaking and held every service game.

With his first ATP Masters Series title, Djokovic became the youngest men's champion in the tournament's 23-year history. He won every set he played _ the first time the Key Biscayne men's champion has done that since Ivan Lendl in 1989.

Djokovic skipped a forehand winner off the baseline on match point and collapsed to his back in glee. He rose to receive a hug from Canas, climbed into the stands to embrace his parents, then returned to the court and threw his shirt and racket to the cheering crowd.

Seeded 10th, Djokovic will improve to a career-high No. 7 in the rankings Monday.

Canas can take consolation in a career resurgence. Ranked as high as eighth before serving a 15-month doping suspension that ended last summer, he was 143rd at the start of the year but will climb to about 31st in the new rankings.

Djokovic mixed pace, spins and angles so well that some of his shots were beyond reach even for Canas, whose forte is fetching. The slender Serb's repertoire ranged from 130-mph serves to feathery drop shots, including one to end the match's longest game.

That game in the second set lasted 20 minutes and 22 points and included an important replay reversal. Djokovic hit a shot ruled wide that would have given Canas a service break for 3-all, but the review led the umpire to order the point replayed.

Djokovic saved two more break points in the game, including one by outlasting Canas in a 37-shot rally, and eventually held for 4-2.

Djokovic faced only two other break points and erased them. He lost serve just once in 59 games in the tournament.

Even as he pulled away, Djokovic's teenage temper occasionally showed. He twice threw his racket and once slammed a ball into the net. But he hardly had cause for anger, committing only 30 unforced errors while hitting 44 winners.

The warm, sunny weather and grinding rallies seemed to favor Canas, the stockier, more physical player. But he began to clutch his left hamstring between points and received a massage from a trainer in the third set.

Canas appeared to favor the leg when he double-faulted in his final service game to fall behind 5-4. Djokovic wavered serving for the match with his lone double-fault and a wild forehand, but smacked confident strokes on the final two points for winners _ and the championship.

Djokovic earned $533,350. Canas received $266,675.

STIGAO NOLE 007!
